General Info

Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. She is associated with the spring and fertility of vegetation. Persephone is married to the god of the underworld Hades. Making her the queen of the underworld. Her common name as a vegetation goddess is Kore. When she goes down to the underworld Persephone's mother, Demeter, mourns her daughter leaving and refuses to grow crops and stuff. Leading to winter where the harvest dies. But when Persephone returns to the overworld Demeter starts growing crops again. This is how the Greeks described the seasons. Persephone rules with Hades while she is in the underworld. Sharing the power over the dead. Before she was "Abducted" by Hades she would travel the world with her mother. She would go around the garden, which she spent alot of her time, and watch the plants grow.

Persephone and the Underworld

Hades was looking for a wife. He in love with his brother's daughter Persephone. So he asked Zeus if he could marry his daughter. And Zeus agreed to allow him to marry her. This is where the story has diffrences, some of the telling leads to him abducting Persephone and some lead to her coming down willingly. We are going to discuss the one when she is abducted. So Persephone was in the garden gathering flowers when she saw a beautiful flower that she has never seen before. She went to go and collect it but hte ground broke below her. And Hades drags her down to the underworld. Demeter, Persephone's mother, couldn't find her daughter so she went around the world to try and find her. She was neglecting the harvest making people start to starve. Zeus didn't like how all the humans were complaining about starving so he went to Hades and told him to return Persephone to her mother. Some accounts says he tricked her into eating Promegranate seeds from the underworld. And in other accounts she ate them without his permission, for if you ate food form the underworld you were not able to leave. Zeus finding out she ate some food from the underworld decided that Persephone will have to stay in the underworld for half of the year, and return to the overworld for the rest.
